Until 1934, rayon was called "artificial silk", since it was intended to imitate natural silk. Today, it can be as close to cotton as wool according to its manufacturing method and is known for its comfort and ease of being dyed with bright colors. In short, its original properties make it a subject that promises to be very popular in 2011.

It is always important to refer to the label regarding the maintenance of a rayon fabric, since there are several types that do not require the same care.

Washing by hand will often be the most appropriate; In this case, use lukewarm water and avoid twisting the fabric to dry.

1. Never forget to read the garment's care label. Why? This is because if you wash a rayon garment that isn't washable it will stretch, shrink, and possibly bleed dyes all over.

2. It is preferable to wash rayon by hand. Remember that rayon is likely to be damaged when it's wet. Though it can be done in a washing machine, it should be done using a net bag or alone in the machine. You need to be careful when using the machine because the washing agitation alone could ruin the rayon fabric.

3. With your hand-washing detergent, wash in cool or temperate water. Gently squeeze and massage the soapsuds into the rayon fabric. Then you can rinse thoroughly in cool water.

4. With your hands shake out gently and smooth out the wrinkles. Never wring, twist, or bunch up rayon fabric.

5. To avoid leaving rust spots on your garment, hang them on a non-metal hanger to dry. You can dry it flat if it could lose its shape. A drying rack is preferred to the towel for drying your garment.

6. To prevent it from shining be sure to iron all rayon fabric inside out. To ease the wrinkling, use low heat and press it while it is slightly damp. Be sure to cover it with your pressing cloth first if you must touch up the right side of the garment.

The question still remains; Can it be machine washed?!

The answer is yes, but...

Rayon will not stand up to the same level of abuse that we put cotton T-shirts and jeans through because it is not as sturdy a fabric as cotton.

Ensure that you wash your rayon alone to avoid tangling in other items. The rayon item will hold up just fine if you machine wash rayon items alone or better yet in a net bag, then.

However, if you want to use the washing machine, be sure to select the delicate cycle, turn the garment upside down if it is printed and use chlorine-free products.

Also, rayon fabric is easier to iron when it is still wet. Always iron at low or medium temperature for best results.

Do not hesitate to read the label before you turn on the faucet. You can simply ask for advice concerning the maintenance of this fabric ... but above all, trust the labels!
